Was Tolkien inspired by Iceland?
This island is buzzing with colorful energy! ..and not only from its flora and fauna. Iceland is the home to many mysterious beings as well, as the veil between worlds is very thin here this high up in the north. Our culture is rich with legends and lore, and stories, real stories, of elves, trolls and the hidden people. For Icelanders it’s easy to assume that J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth and characters were greatly inspired by Iceland, its culture and it’s hidden worlds. (We love this little gem of a story) Not only did Tolkien graduate with Old Icelandic as a special subject, but at the time he wrote The Hobbit, his children were taken care of by an Icelandic au pair named Arndís Þorbjarnardóttir. She told the children stories from her home country, of hairy trolls, elf queens, and the hidden people who live in the stones. And she was not the first Icelander he invited into his household either. Arndis was the successor of another Icelandic girl named Aslaug, who undoubtedly told her own tales from the island of the Sagas and the hidden worlds and wonders.
